Birdwatching – Matulji

Because of the diversity of landscapes and bird habitats over a relatively small area, birdwatchers in Matulji can enjoy spotting a wide variety of bird species in different types of habitats (marine, forest, grassland, rocky). Some of these birds live and nest here; others are just passing through the area on their spring and autumn migrations.

Following bird species can be observed in the area of Matulji and Mount Učka:

Sparrowhawk – Accipiter nisus, Goshawk – Accipiter gentilis, Common Buzzard – Buteo buteo, Honey Buzzard – Pernis apivorus, Short-toed Eagle – Circaetus gallicus, Common Kestrel – Falco tinnunculus, Peregrine Falcon – Falco peregrinus, Rock Partridge – Alectoris graeca, Brown Owl – Strix aluco, Eurasian Eagle-owl – Bubo bubo, Nightjar – Caprimulgus europaeus, Alpine Swift – Apus melba, European Bee-eater – Merops apiaster, Nuthatch – Sitta europaea, Great Spotted Woodpecker – Dendrocopus major, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker – Dendrocopus minor, Black Woodpecker – Dryocopus maritus, Green Woodpecker – Picus virdis, Grey-headed Woodpecker – Picus canus, Woodlark – Lullula arborea, Skylark – Alauda arvensis, Tree Pipit – Antus trivialis, Meadow Pipit – Antus pratensis, Black Redstart – Phoenicurus ochruros, Common redstart – Phoenicurus phoenicurus, Wheatear – Oenanthe oeanthe, Blackbird – Turdus merula, Mistle Thrush– Turdus viscivorus, Song Thrush – Turdus philomelos, Fieldfare – Turdus pilaris, various warbles – the most common being the Blackcap – Sylvia atricapilla, then Crested Tit – Parus cristatus, Marsh Tit – Parus palustris, Coal Tit – Parus ater, and other birds of the tit family, Wallcreeper – Tichodroma muraria, various types of finches (Fringillidae) and buntings (Emberizidae), most prominent on Mount Učka being the Ortolan – Emberiza hortulana, etc. It is also possible to spot the Golden Eagle – Aquila chrysaetos or Eurasian Griffon Vulture– Gyps fulvus.

Price: 110€ for one person (each additional person pays 15€, max. 4 persons)

B) Visits to: Lisina, Žejane, Mune, Rupa, Lipa, Klana
price: 110€ for one person (each additional person pays 15€, max. 4 persons)

Half-day tours
A) Visits to: Osojnica, Lisina, Žejane, Mune
Price: 65€ for one person (each additional person pays 15€)

B) Visits to: Rupa, Klana, Lipa
Price: 65€ for one person (each additional person pays 15€)

Services included in the price:
Expert guide in English or Italian (optional: French) and transport (with off-road vehicles) to individual birdwatching sites and pick up and return service to the place of residence/accommodation within 20 km from the birdwatching site.
The price does not include pick up and return service for people whose place of residence/accommodation is located at a distance larger than 20 km from the birdwatching site. In such cases, the price increases by 4 kn/kilometre.

Note: It is also possible to organise birdwatching tours for more than 4 persons, or photo tours in the area of above mentioned birdwatching tours.
